CELEBRATE FREEDOM
Most senior citizens cherish their independence. The ability to continue to drive is a great part of that right. But let’s face it, fellow oldsters, our driving skills are not as sharp as they once were.
Recently, on a three mile trip from home to downtown, I managed to make not one, but two stupid moves (errors in judgement), that would not have happened twenty years ago.
Traveling east on Cornwallis, I was waiting to turn right onto Benjamin Parkway. I checked oncoming traffic, noticed several cars in the far lane, but none in the near lane. I proceeded to initiate my safe right turn, and for no logical reason, went through the right (clear) directly into the left (conjested) lane. Several loud irate honks prompted me to check my rear view mirror revealed a too close for comfort vehicle, with the driver shaking his fist. My first reaction was “Where in H… did you come from?” My second was, “What a stupid move, Jack!”
My next error in judgemant came a few blocks later. While contemplating which one-way street to take going south, loud honks greeted me, and I awakened to the fact that I had just run a red light. Two stupid moves in less than five minutes!
Wake up and smell the coffee, Jack! You could have added to your peril by eating a sandwich, drinking a coke, and using a cell phone. To my good fortune, no one was killed.
